Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah on Thursday urged the BJP-led Central government to draw critical lessons from the recent violence erupting in Leh, Ladakh. The unrest, fueled by long-standing demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, reflects deep-seated local grievances.
In a press conference, Abdullah connected the violence to frustration over unfulfilled commitments made by the government, highlighting that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to similar broken promises regarding statehood. This situation has led to a significant sense of disillusionment among the local populace.
Abdullah emphasized that the unrest does not stem from external influences but rather reflects the genuine concerns of the people of Ladakh. Notably, he referenced respected activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has championed peaceful protests, including a hunger strike and a barefoot march from Leh to Delhi, as symbolic gestures of the ongoing struggle for rights.
“The government must engage sincerely with the people of Ladakh to resolve their aspirations and mitigate further unrest,” Abdullah insisted. He warned of the risks in border areas like Ladakh, especially amid ongoing destabilisation efforts by China. His comments highlight the urgent need for constructive dialogue, underscoring that proactive engagement can avert escalating tensions.
According to local reports, the violent protests have tragically resulted in the deaths of four individuals, along with over 80 injuries, which also included police personnel. Incidents of violence included the torching of BJP offices, police vehicles, and other properties, prompting police to respond with tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the crowds.
Abdullah’s statements resonate deeply with the sentiments echoed across various sections of the community in Ladakh, where residents continue to advocate for both political recognition and preservation of their unique identity. The call for the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule aims to ensure greater autonomy and safeguard against potential marginalization.
