GMC Doda NICU Successfully Manages Heaviest Newborn

In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn who weighed a staggering 6 kilograms at birth, marking it as one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. The impressive feat occurred on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, when the newborn entered the world delivered by a diabetic mother.

Minutes after birth, the infant exhibited severe respiratory distress, prompting immediate action from medical staff. Recognizing the critical condition, healthcare professionals promptly admitted the baby to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and monitoring.

The baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and evident signs of respiratory compromise necessitated the initiation of specialized neonatal respiratory support. The medical team closely monitored several vital indicators, including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, body temperature, and neurological activity. Over the next few days, the infant displayed positive responses, leading to gradual weaning off respiratory support.

For the final 72 hours prior to discharge, the newborn maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation without episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After exhibiting significant clinical stability, the baby was discharged in healthy condition, with routine follow-ups advised to ensure continued well-being.

The successful management of this challenging case came under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, supported by faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. The collaborative effort included a dedicated team of senior and junior residents who worked tirelessly throughout the process.

Special acknowledgment goes to the nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda for their commitment and compassionate care, which proved vital to the newborn’s recovery. Their vigilant monitoring and unwavering dedication contributed significantly to this successful outcome.

This achievement highlights growing expertise in neonatal care at GMC Doda, showcasing the institution’s commitment to quality, evidence-based, and compassionate healthcare for newborns and children in the region. The successful management of one of the heaviest newborns serves as a testament to the exceptional talent and teamwork within the pediatric department, affirming GMC Doda’s status as a leading facility for neonatal care.
