In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing a hefty 6 kilograms at birth. This case marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution, highlighting its advanced medical capabilities.
The baby arrived on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, under the care of a diabetic mother. Within the first 30 minutes of life, the infant developed severe respiratory distress, prompting the immediate admission to the NICU for urgent and specialized care.
Medical experts quickly recognized the critical nature of the baby’s condition. Given the large-for-gestational-age status and evident respiratory compromise, the medical team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. Doctors closely monitored respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity to ensure comprehensive care.
Over the following days, the infant showed a positive response to treatment, which enabled the gradual weaning of respiratory support. The dedicated team observed significant improvement, ensuring the baby could breathe independently without aid.
During the 72 hours leading to discharge, the newborn exhibited stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. Remarkably, there were no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. Once the baby demonstrated sustained clinical stability, the medical team discharged the newborn in a healthy condition, with routine follow-up care advised.
