Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been awarded the prestigious Vir Chakra for his exemplary courage during Operation Sindoor conducted in May. This operation underscored the bravery of the IAF amidst intense conflict against Pakistan.
The Government Gazette published on October 4 highlighted Group Captain Sidhu’s extraordinary efforts. His citation commended him for flying several deep-penetration strike missions, which successfully targeted and destroyed crucial enemy installations.
During the four-day military engagement, Sidhu led a squadron equipped with advanced fighter aircraft through complex threat scenarios and formidable air defences. His leadership proved essential in executing successful missions in hostile airspace, achieving every designated objective.
As Commanding Officer, Group Captain Sidhu demonstrated unmatched acts of gallantry and commitment to his duty. The citation noted his ability to make swift decisions in real-time, ensuring mission success despite personal risks. His bold maneuvers and tactical acumen significantly protected his team and averted potential disasters.
Group Captain Sidhu coordinated operations from three different locations along the Western sector, further adding to the IAF’s operational flexibility and effectiveness. His guidance ensured that the IAF maintained an enhanced offensive posture that gave India a decisive edge throughout the conflict.
The significance of these operations became evident as nine IAF pilots, including Sidhu, received the Vir Chakra for their heroic roles in precision strikes against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-controlled territories. These operations were a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, emphasizing the determination of the IAF in countering threats to national security.
Among the recipients were also Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra, whose efforts were critical during the operation. The gallantry displayed by these officers underlined a collective bravery that underpinned the success of Operation Sindoor.
Group Captain Arora received accolades for his unparalleled leadership during an unescorted strike mission. His citation recognized his audacity in executing low-level night maneuvers through heavily defended airspace, achieving pinpoint precision in the face of multiple threats.
Similarly, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik’s bravery was noted for his audacious maneuvers that created significant confusion among enemy formations, showcasing the tactical prowess of the IAF pilots.
On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards. These recognitions reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to honouring the bravery and sacrifice of armed forces personnel.
