Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of betraying the people of Ladakh, following a tragic incident where police firing resulted in the deaths of four protesters. Gandhi’s remarks come amid heightened tensions and calls for justice from the region’s residents.
The fatal incident occurred during a protest demanding statehood for Ladakh, further intensifying the ongoing unrest in the region. Among those killed, Kargil war veteran Tsewang Tharchin became a symbol of the outrage expressed by various leaders, including Gandhi. Tharchin’s family, notably his father, who also served in the Indian Army, has captured public attention with their poignant story of sacrifice and loyalty to the nation.
In a powerful statement posted on X, Gandhi shared a video of Tharchin’s father, articulating the family’s grief by stating, “Father in the army, son in the army – patriotism runs in their blood. Yet the BJP government shot and killed this brave son of the nation, simply because he stood up for Ladakh and his rights.” This marks a significant moment in the discourse surrounding the rights of Ladakh residents.
Gandhi further called for an impartial judicial inquiry into the killings, demanding that the culprits face the harshest punishment. He emphasized that “communicate with them – stop the politics of violence and fear.” This strong call to action resonates with the sentiments of many residents who feel neglected and betrayed.
The Congress party had vehemently condemned the killings, with Jairam Ramesh, the party’s general secretary, highlighting that Tharchin fought valiantly at the Siachen Glacier and in the Kargil War. Ramesh’s post on X criticized the government for its handling of the situation, describing it as an outrage that a decorated veteran lost his life while peacefully protesting for the rights of his people.
“It should be a matter of the deepest anguish and outrage that he was killed along with three others in the firing on the agitationists five days back,” Ramesh asserted, reiterating the call for justice. He pointed out the fundamental demand for the Sixth Schedule status that many Ladakh residents are advocating for, seeking constitutional guarantees for their rights.
As the protest escalated into violence, police reportedly responded with force, resulting in injuries to scores of individuals. During the protest, demonstrators set a local BJP office on fire and retaliated by hurling stones at security forces, showcasing the mounting frustration and anger in the region.
In the aftermath of the unrest, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk faced detention under the National Security Act, leading to further backlash against governmental actions. His arrest highlights ongoing concerns regarding freedom of expression and the safety of activists advocating for change in Ladakh.
