Congress Urges Government to Address Ladakh Aspirations Quickly

The Congress party has called upon the Central Government to swiftly address the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh. This demand comes amidst rising unrest after protests for statehood turned violent this Wednesday, resulting in four fatalities and over 90 injuries.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, voiced the party’s concerns on social media. He stated that six years following the formation of the Union Territory of Ladakh, the people’s expectations remain unmet, leading to significant disappointment and discontent.

“The people of Ladakh see their land and employment rights under severe threat,” Ramesh remarked while highlighting the overwhelming control exerted by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) and bureaucracy over local administration and elected bodies.

He emphasized that despite numerous meetings, the local population has not received a satisfactory resolution regarding their demands for inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution or the establishment of an elected legislature.

Additionally, Ramesh noted the growing uncertainty influenced by China’s recent actions along the Line of Actual Control, referring to it as a “unilateral abrogation of the status quo.” He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks from June 19, 2020, which he interpreted as a “clean chit” to China, further aggravating the situation.

“Ladakh holds profound cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic significance for India. The people of this region have consistently demonstrated their patriotic spirit,” Ramesh added. He stressed that the distress and anguish visible among the Ladakhi people should prompt the Government of India into immediate action, beyond just discussions.

As tensions simmered in the region, an uneasy calm settled in Ladakh on Thursday. Authorities enforced a strict curfew in Leh town to maintain order after the previous day’s chaos. Reports indicate that at least 50 individuals have been detained in connection with the unrest sparked by the shutdown organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), advocating for statehood and the expansion of the Sixth Schedule.

The protests and subsequent violence underscore the urgency for the government to recognize and address the sentiments of the Ladakhi population. Failure to do so may lead to escalating frustrations among a community deeply invested in the political and economic future of their land.
