Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, aiming to transform the iconic ski resort into Asia’s premier destination for international conferences and events. The unveiling took place today in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, as the state invests in its tourism infrastructure.
Built at a cost of ₹21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the Centre is envisioned as a catalyst for promoting tourism, culture, and business convergence in the region. With a keen focus on MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, this facility is expected to attract a diverse array of international events.
Government Officials Present at the Launch
A multitude of dignitaries were in attendance, including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A Shah, and Additional Chief Secretary of Tourism, Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma. Their presence highlighted the collaborative effort undertaken by various departments to propel Jammu and Kashmir tourism.
Foundation Stone of Ski Hire Shop Laid
As part of the inauguration, Abdullah also laid the foundation stone for a Ski Hire Shop, intended to enhance Gulmarg’s winter sports appeal. This move indicates the government’s commitment to improve the overall visitor experience in Gulmarg.
“Constructing physical infrastructure is merely the beginning; ensuring its effective use and maintenance is paramount,” Abdullah remarked during his speech. He acknowledged the NBCC’s on-time project completion but pointed out that essential furnishing details had been overlooked in the original design.
Positioning Gulmarg as Asia’s Davos
Abdullah expressed an ambitious vision for the Convention Centre, envisioning it as a future hub for high-profile events and conferences similar to the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland. The chief minister emphasized the importance of promoting the Convention Centre as part of a dynamic package that could draw various international conferences and other events.
“I wish to see Gulmarg recognized on the global stage like Davos, attracting at least two or three major international events annually,” Abdullah highlighted. His optimism reflects a determination to elevate not just the Convention Centre, but the entire Gulmarg area as a significant player in global tourism.
Enhancing Evening Tourism Experiences
Addressing the need for vibrant nightlife in Gulmarg, particularly during the winter months, Abdullah proposed the introduction of recreational activities. He discussed creating a coffee shop, restaurant, and even a digital cinema projection system to ensure that tourists don’t run out of things to do after a day of skiing and sightseeing.
“Currently, visitors can enjoy winter sports, yet once night falls, their options dwindle. This facility can bring about a transformation. A lively atmosphere will not only enhance tourists’ experiences but will also contribute to the local economy,” the chief minister stated.
Utilizing the Centre for Government Activities
Abdullah urged various government departments to use the Centre for official meetings, training programs, and events, promoting its usage until significant interest from the private sector takes form. He suggested that departments like education, health, and social welfare could host activities to ensure the facility is actively used.
In concluding his address, Abdullah congratulated the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority, affirming that this project represents a significant milestone in the regional tourism profile. “With the right management, the Convention Centre will be more than just a space for conferences; it will become a vibrant hub for cultural and recreational tourism,” he concluded.
