7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Davao Oriental, Tsunami Alert Issued

An offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of Davao Oriental, a southern province of the Philippines, on Friday morning, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings for nearby areas. The quake occurred at approximately 8:00 AM local time and raised alarms about potential hazardous sea conditions.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake resulted from a shallow fault movement at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremor’s epicentre lay about 62 kilometres southeast of Manay town. Subsequent assessments revealed the likelihood of damage to structures and strong aftershocks following the initial quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Honolulu reported that hazardous waves could occur within 300 kilometres of the epicentre. Some coastal areas of the Philippines may experience waves reaching up to 3 metres above normal tide levels. Experts also indicated that smaller tsunami waves might affect regions in Indonesia and Palau, adding to the urgency of response measures.

Notably, the Philippines faces heightened vulnerability to seismic events. The nation is still recovering from a previous magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck on September 30, which killed at least 74 people and displaced thousands, particularly in Cebu, affecting areas like Bogo city and surrounding towns.

Located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, the Philippines ranks among the world’s most disaster-prone countries, facing roughly 20 typhoons and storms annually. This frequent exposure underscores the critical need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and effective response systems involving government and volunteer organizations.

Authorities have urged residents living along coastal areas to remain vigilant, follow evacuation protocols, and stay tuned for updates from local officials. As the situation develops, community preparedness and resilience remain essential in ensuring safety during such unpredictable natural events.
