India upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy on Friday, marking a pivotal moment in diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan. This upgrade came during a significant meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.
India first suspended its embassy operations after the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, pulling all officials out. In June 2022, a technical team returned to Kabul to resume limited operations. The recent elevation to full embassy status aims to foster deeper engagement, with a focus on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security cooperation.
“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” Jaishankar stated in his opening remarks. He highlighted India’s profound interest in the progress and development of Afghanistan, calling it a well-wisher of the Afghan people.
Jaishankar further remarked that India’s long-standing partnership, which previously facilitated major projects in Afghanistan, is now renewed. He commended the Taliban for showing “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack that raised alarms regarding safety and stability in the region.
The minister stressed that both countries share a commitment to growth, stability, and prosperity, while confronting the common menace of cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he asserted, underscoring the necessity of collaboration between India and Afghanistan.
Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi acknowledged India as a crucial regional partner that has historically supported Afghan people. He expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian assistance and sought to expand cooperation in key areas such as trade, infrastructure, and education.
This upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul highlights New Delhi’s cautious yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. This move reflects India’s commitment to enhance security, regional stability, and reinforce its long-standing ties with the Afghan populace.
