Assam’s flood crisis deepens as the death toll reaches 82 with 1.92 lakh individuals impacted across Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Charaideo districts. Officials reported two additional fatalities on Saturday, underscoring the severity of the ongoing situation.
Recent days have seen a slight improvement, as just over two lakh people faced hardships in eight districts on Thursday. However, authorities remain vigilant, with the Dikhow and Dhansiri rivers currently in a severe flood state in Sivasagar and Numaligarh.
Emergency relief efforts continue with approximately 13,000 people taking refuge in 54 camps and 5,384 individuals receiving supplies from 26 relief distribution centers. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel work tirelessly to assist those affected.
The state government plans to engage with insurance companies and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) for swift settlement of claims related to damaged properties. They aim to provide needed support to their constituents amidst these challenging conditions.
“We are assessing the damage in all affected regions to ensure that relief funds reach those in need quickly,” an official stated. The continued rains and adverse weather conditions have affected residents in Charaideo the most, where 77,456 people endure the consequences.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a meeting scheduled for August 5 with both private and government insurance firms to expedite claims settlements covering vehicles, livestock, and property damaged by the floods.
Simultaneously, the government will request a six-month loan moratorium for flood-hit individuals from Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts as part of their comprehensive support plan.
The cabinet’s decisions follow a special meeting of the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), which reinforces the need for sustained financial and logistical support amid this natural disaster.
In light of the urgent need for assistance, Chief Minister Sarma shared on social media that ₹41 crore has been allocated under the PM Surya Ghar scheme for residents affected by the floods. This aid aims to provide immediate relief and assist over 9,289 beneficiaries.
“As floods impact these four districts of Assam, our government stands firmly with each affected family. We are committed to ensuring that relief reaches every survivor,” stated Sarma.
The Power Department has also been instructed to directly credit financial assistance into beneficiaries’ bank accounts by Tuesday, emphasizing the government’s commitment to quick and efficient support.
