The Congress party on Thursday launched a sharp attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over rising unemployment in India. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, stated that since Modi took office, the issue of unemployment has escalated into a major concern, yet he continues to remain “always in election mode.”
Ramesh emphasized that instead of formulating solutions, Modi appears busy “inventing new speeches” to divert public attention from critical issues. He remarked, “The past 11 years of misrule under the Modi government have adversely affected every section of society.”
In a post on X, Ramesh noted that not a single segment of the population is satisfied with the government’s performance. He highlighted the discontent of students, youth, farmers, labourers, and shopkeepers as inflation soars, the rupee’s value declines, and the divide between the rich and poor widens.
Ramesh further pointed to alarming statistics regarding unemployment, stating that India’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest level in six months, according to the CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) report. “Millions of people have lost their jobs across sectors, including construction and IT banking,” he said.
Over 90 lakh jobs have vanished from the construction industry alone, while the salaried employment sector has plummeted by 25 lakh, raising serious concerns about job security and economic stability. This situation marks a troubling trend that has emerged consistently over the past 11 years, yet the government seems indifferent to it.
Ramesh directly targeted PM Modi, stating, “It appears Modi ji has no concern for the youth of this country. Always in election mode, he is busy crafting new speeches and narratives to distract the public instead of tackling the unemployment crisis.”
The Congress party has consistently criticized the government’s approach to managing the economy. They assert that escalating prices, dwindling private investment, and stagnant wages are wreaking havoc on everyday citizens. The opposition demands that the government prioritize meaningful economic reforms and job creation, rather than continuing with mere propaganda and political rhetoric.
As India continues to grapple with these critical issues, the Congress party’s accusations may resonate with the public, especially in a climate where economic performance is a fundamental topic ahead of upcoming elections.
