In a recent assembly session, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, declared that the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district face no shortage of food grains. This announcement came in response to a Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA Mir Saifullah regarding concerns over food availability in these remote regions.
Saifullah pointed out that prolonged winter conditions can isolate Keran and Jamgund for nearly six months due to heavy snowfall. These conditions often result in essential supplies running low, raising alarms among local residents.
Minister Sharma addressed the assembly, stating that the government implements measures to stockpile food grains in advance, ensuring sufficient supply to meet local demands. He noted that the government, under various schemes, dumps and supplies food grains for a duration of eight months, from November through June, significantly before the winter months.
Providing concrete data, Sharma highlighted that Jamgund requires 536.14 quintals of food grains from November 2025 to June 2026, with 100% of this quantity already successfully delivered. In contrast, Keran has been allocated 2774.43 quintals and has already received 800 quintals; an additional 346.80 quintals remain stored at designated sites.
Sharma emphasized the government’s commitment, stating, “The remaining quantity shall be delivered and stocked by or before October 31, 2025.” He reassured the assembly that there is no need for concern regarding food supplies in these border areas.
Local communities often depend on timely food grain supplies, especially during harsh winters. The assurance by Minister Sharma aims to alleviate worries surrounding food security in the northern border regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
