Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are eyeing participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup, but head coach Gautam Gambhir stresses the necessity of concentrating on current performances. Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, Gambhir remained cautious about future commitments, advocating for a focus on immediate outcomes.
With Shubman Gill recently appointed as India’s ODI captain, the national selectors are signaling a clear transition in the team’s structure going into the future. Kohli will be 39 and Rohit 40 by the time the World Cup arrives, raising inquiries regarding their long-term roles in the squad.
“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is crucial to stay in the present. Both players are immensely talented, and their experience will be vital during the series in Australia. We hope for their success as well as a strong team performance,” Gambhir highlighted, acknowledging their contributions while urging caution regarding future assumptions.
Reports indicate that their participation in the World Cup will rely heavily on their performances in the upcoming nine ODIs, with three matches each against top teams like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand scheduled over the next few months. Performance consistency will be the key determinant during this critical period.
In his inaugural year as head coach, Gambhir has initiated a comprehensive transition across all formats of the game. He aims to emphasize the identification of promising new talents while ensuring a stable selection process. Elaborating on the players he seeks for national selection, Gambhir stated:
“Talent is the first criterion. Next, we assess work ethic and character, particularly in red-ball cricket. A player’s hunger for success also plays a crucial role. Those who embody these qualities will have a successful career in international cricket.”
Gambhir further acknowledged the insecure nature of international cricket due to fierce competition for limited team spots. “International cricket is an environment filled with uncertainty. It’s critical to give players a more extended opportunity. Only 15 players can represent the country at any time, but many aspiring cricketers are waiting for their chance,” he remarked.
Asserting the importance of empathy in team selection, Gambhir shared his aversion to the term ‘dropping players’, reiterating his approach: “We don’t drop players; we only select players. When a player misses out, it’s imperative for a coach to show empathy rather than ruthlessness.”
Praising the squad’s discipline during the recent tour of England, Gambhir concluded: “The Test team that competed in England displayed remarkable diligence and commitment. That’s a huge positive for us moving forward.”
