The Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, officially inaugurated the Annual Sports Meet-2025 of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina. The event commenced on June 12, 2025, and will run for two days, featuring a wide range of sports and recreational activities.
During her opening address, Minister Itoo emphasized the pivotal connection between physical and mental well-being and the delivery of quality healthcare. She praised GMC Srinagar for hosting the sports meet, stating that sports and recreational activities are essential for stress management. This is particularly important for students and professionals in demanding medical fields who often face high-pressure environments.
Minister Itoo urged the GMC administration to upgrade facilities at the Boys Hostel playground to foster greater student involvement in extracurricular activities. By enhancing these facilities, students can engage more effectively in sports, thereby improving their overall well-being.
The sports meet, planned and organized under the supervision of Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, features a diverse selection of events. Participants can enjoy competitive sports such as cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis, carrom, and tug of war. Track and field events will also take place, including the 100m, 200m, 400m races, followed by relays and field events like shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw.
In addition to competitive events, the sports meet includes engaging fun games like matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race. These activities aim to foster camaraderie among medical professionals and students, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere of teamwork and holistic well-being.
The inaugural ceremony attracted a significant gathering, comprising Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Heads of Departments, Medical Superintendents, faculty members, students, and staff. Their presence underlines the importance of sports and community engagement within the medical education system.
