National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah praised the Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday for its significant efforts to revive tourism following the tragic Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives on April 22. He welcomed the reopening of numerous tourist destinations across the region, emphasizing the vital role of tourism in J&K’s economy and social fabric.
The remarks came in an official statement released on World Tourism Day, observed on September 27. Abdullah extended warm greetings to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and global admirers of the region’s unmatched natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Recognizing the global significance of tourism, Abdullah highlighted the need for a renewed commitment to this sector in J&K. He stated that tourism in the region transcends mere economic activity; it serves as a crucial source of livelihood for thousands of families.
Abdullah commended the Omar Abdullah-led administration for its swift actions in revitalizing the tourism industry during challenging periods, especially in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. “The administration responded quickly and effectively to restore tourist confidence, reaffirming J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination,” he said.
The NC chief noted that these efforts will establish a strong foundation for sustainable tourism growth in the region. He welcomed the reopening of several destinations that had been closed, which signifies a cooperative effort towards tourism resurgence.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the reopening of restricted tourist sites on Friday. He aims to facilitate the return of tourists, which is fundamental for rejuvenating J&K’s tourism-centric economy. The reopening signifies optimism and a forward path for both local businesses and travelers.
Abdullah underscored the importance of inclusive development, particularly urging equal attention to regions such as Chenab and Pir Panjal. These areas possess unique cultural heritage and natural attractions that can contribute significantly to J&K’s tourism landscape.
