External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for a stronger solidarity among Global South nations at a High-Level Meeting held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
Jaishankar emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and a collective push for reforms at the United Nations. He stated, “In the face of a proliferation of global concerns and multiplicity of risks, it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.”
The minister outlined a structured approach for how the Global South can enhance its engagement with world affairs. He proposed five key strategies aimed at strengthening the collective voice and influence of developing nations.
Jaishankar highlighted the importance of utilizing existing forums to boost consultations among Global South countries. He affirmed that fostering solidarity and encouraging collaboration could empower the developing nations on the international stage.
Furthermore, Jaishankar called for comprehensive reform of the UN and insisted that multilateralism itself must evolve to address contemporary global issues. He urged the Global South to bring its unique strengths, experiences, and achievements to the forefront. By sharing insights on vaccines, digital capabilities, education resources, agro-practices, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), developing nations can collectively uplift each other.
When discussing climate action, the minister stressed the importance of an equitable approach to global challenges. He urged the Global South to initiate projects that meet its direct interests rather than merely adapting to the views of the Global North. “We must craft initiatives that reflect our priorities,” said Jaishankar.
Jaishankar also underscored the necessity of engaging in crucial discussions on emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. He noted that it is vital to ensure developing countries do not fall behind in the changing global landscape.
“At this juncture, we must collectively act for a better future, not just for ourselves, but for generations to come,” Jaishankar added. His remarks resonate with India’s ongoing commitment to assert the voice of the Global South within international discourse.
