Four Dead, 30 Injured in Leh Clashes During Protest

In a tragic incident in Leh, four individuals died and 30 sustained injuries during intense protests on Wednesday. The clashes erupted between demonstrators advocating for statehood for Ladakh and security personnel in the town of Leh, resulting in law enforcement firing to control the situation.

The violence unfolded during a shutdown called by the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) to demand statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule. Protesters attacked a BJP office and several vehicles, prompting police to intervene. Authorities reported that the violence escalated as demonstrators became increasingly agitated.

Eyewitnesses and officials confirmed that the protesters accused the police of causing the fatalities through gunfire. A government spokesperson stated, “The situation was precarious, and law enforcement had no alternative but to use firearms to ensure safety.”

The protests gained momentum after two members of a 15-person group on a 35-day hunger strike were taken to a hospital following concerning health issues. This marked a critical moment for the LAB’s demands, which focus on addressing grievances related to governance in Ladakh.

The LAB launched the protest after the two activists, who had initiated their hunger strike on September 10, became critically ill. In a statement, LAB leaders exclaimed, “Our demands for statehood and the Sixth Schedule are fundamental rights, and we will not rest until they are fulfilled.”

The recent clashes in Leh highlight the growing tensions surrounding the region’s political future. As calls for statehood intensify, stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the response from the central government. Public sentiment is shifting as residents express frustration over ongoing neglect and the need for recognition.

The Ladakh region has witnessed a series of protests since its bifurcation from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, with locals demanding greater autonomy and rights to safeguard their culture and resources. As the situation develops, local leaders and citizens alike are looking towards authorities for answers and a resolution that respects their aspirations.
