Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated on Sunday that peace is a fundamental prerequisite for development, particularly for the tourism and sports sectors, in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah made this assertion while addressing reporters after launching the jersey for Real Kashmir Football Club in Srinagar.
“For development, tourism or sports… we need peace for everything. If we talk about having day and night matches, and if the situation is not good, then who will come to play in the evening?” Abdullah stressed during the event.
He underscored that peace is the foundation for growth, mentioning that the jersey launched is not just a piece of sports equipment but also a message of unity and peace.
On Saturday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha echoed Abdullah’s sentiments, highlighting that peace remains a precondition for the region’s development and pointed out that remnants of terrorism still exist in the Union Territory.
Abdullah clarified that the responsibility for establishing peace lies with various stakeholders, not exclusively with his government. He expressed frustration over the government being targeted for issues beyond its control, asserting, “The responsibility for peace does not fall with me; those who are responsible should fulfil their duties.”
The Chief Minister remarked that while his administration receives criticism for the security situation, several issues related to law and order are outside the purview of the state government.
While discussing sports infrastructure, Abdullah elaborated on the government’s commitment to enhancing sports facilities across Jammu and Kashmir. He stated, “There is hardly any assembly segment where some sports infrastructure is not being built by our government.” These efforts include a focus on youth engagement.
“Our goal is to create robust sports infrastructure and empower young people to utilize these facilities effectively,” he added. The government has been actively organizing tournaments and sports events at various levels.
The much-anticipated second edition of the Kashmir marathon is scheduled for November 2. Abdullah extended an invitation to athletes nationwide, particularly those interested in participating in a half-marathon, to join in Srinagar.
Discussing the status of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway impacted by recent landslides, Abdullah informed, “We haven’t been able to do black-topping on the 300-meter stretch that was washed away. We will address this after some time, and then vehicles can move freely. But, as of now, no vehicles are stranded.”
Earlier, during the ceremonial launch of the special edition “Peace Jersey” of Real Kashmir FC, which was developed in collaboration with the Danish sportswear brand Hummel, Abdullah highlighted the initiative’s role in promoting peace and unity. The jersey pays homage to Kashmir’s cultural diversity and heritage.
Designed with inspiration from the historic Hari Parbat Fort—a symbol of communal harmony—the sky-blue jersey represents peace. Abdullah emphasized, “Real Kashmir FC showcases how football can inspire and unite communities. Sports are a vital bridge for peace.”
