In a bold press conference on Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of protecting “vote chors”—individuals undermining democracy—citing evidence from Karnataka’s elections. Gandhi stated that there are systematic efforts to delete the votes of Congress supporters ahead of upcoming elections.
During his address at the Congress headquarters in Indira Bhawan, Gandhi urged the Election Commission to halt these practices immediately. He demanded that the Commission provide information sought by the Karnataka CID within a week regarding their investigation into voter deletions.
Alarming Voter Deletions in Karnataka
Gandhi emphasized that these actions are not isolated incidents. He shared alarming statistics revealing that in the Aland constituency, 6,018 votes were reportedly targeted for deletion. This discovery came to light when a booth-level officer detected irregularities involving a friend’s uncle’s vote.
Systematic Attempts to Manipulate Elections
“Someone is targeting millions of voters for deletion all across India,” Gandhi claimed, hinting at a larger conspiracy. He alleged that automated software has been used to file impersonation applications, facilitating these deletions with mobile numbers registered outside Karnataka.
To drive his point home, Gandhi presented a voter whose name was misused in this deletion attempt. This individual, alongside another who was impersonated, both denied any knowledge of the deletions.
“These deletions are systematic. The Election Commission stands aware of who is conducting them,” he asserted, provoking further concerns about the integrity of the nation’s democratic process.
Call to Action for Transparency
Gandhi underscored the need for transparency from the Election Commission as investigations continue. The Karnataka CID has sent 18 letters over the past 18 months requesting basic information such as the IP addresses from which these applications were filed, but these requests remain unfulfilled.
“When they refuse to provide this information, it defends those who are committing these offenses against our democracy,” Gandhi claimed.
A Promised “Hydrogen Bomb” of Revelations
Rahul Gandhi hinted that more significant revelations are forthcoming, referring to them as the “hydrogen bomb” of disclosures about voter fraud. He has promised that once this information is released, it could create embarrassment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Previously, Gandhi alleged that over one lakh votes were manipulated in the Mahadevapura constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, dubbing the phenomenon “vote chori” as an assault on democracy.
As tensions rise ahead of the elections, Gandhi’s statements have generated significant public interest, especially among youth, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining democratic integrity in India. His assertion that the votes of the youth are being compromised has evoked widespread concern and engagement with crucial electoral issues.
